DCC’s paper mache is fun, lightweight and simple to decorate. Covering your paper mache angel with pages from an old book, then adding gold leaf gives you a nostalgic holiday decoration for a shelf or table ledge. Our project was designed using book pages but this would work equally as well with wrapping paper, news print, magazine pages, fabric, tissue paper or even napkins. Tissue paper and napkins are transparent so we suggest that you paint your angel white first. Or, you can use photo copies of old letters and postcards to personalize your angel. Enjoy!
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
28-4333 DCC's Paper Mache Angel Laying Facing Right
Plaid’s Royal Coat Decoupage Medium
Sponge Brush Applicator
Gold Leaf Adhesive (We used Mona Lisa)
Gold Leaf
Brown Acrylic Craft Paint
Acrylic Matte Finish (spray or brush on)
Old book, hard cover or paper back
Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
INSTRUCTIONS:
Tear book pages into manageable strips, squares, triangles. Tearing the paper give you a feather edge that will lay flatter if you have to overlap.
Note: if you are using news print you should lightly spray both sides with a spray acrylic matte finish. This will prevent the printers ink from running and you won’t see the ghost image from the reverse side.
Apply a generous amount of decoupage medium to a small area. Use your fingers or sponge brush to press the paper securely onto the surface.
Note: on the sample the writing is applied randomly with some of the print horizontal, vertical and even upside down.
Once the paper is applied varnish your angel with matte acrylic finish.
Mix brown acrylic paint with water for a light stain. We usually mix till the paint to the consistency of ink.
Work a small area at a time. Brush on the stain and immediately wipe away the excess leaving stain in the cracks and crevasses of the paper. Let dry. Noted we brushed on a little more brown stain to the eye and mouth area, just enough to give the illusion of eyes and a mouth.
Apply Gold Leaf adhesive at random over the angel and to a portion of the Rusty Tin-Tique tm snowflake. Brush adhesive on with quick whispy strokes. You don’t want the gold leaf to be solid. Let the adhesive dry 30 minutes. Lay the gold leaf over the adhesive and with a clean paper towel pat and rub the gold leaf in place.
Finish you piece with another coat of matte finish.
Add gold cord to your snowflake allowing it to dangle at least 1”. Tie into a bow and glue to angels hand. Glue on sprigs of greener.
