You don’t have to be an expert painter to paint this Jolly Snowman. Paper mache is a very forgiving surface to decorate. DCC’s paper mache is handmade and the creases and crevasses of the layers of paper give a texture to your painting that allows you to get an interesting background without any effort.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Basic Painting Instructions - Paint upper bulb portion of the paper mache snowman white. Paint the band green and the base red.
Use a pencil or tooth pick to add the three dot pattern in white to the red base. Let dry.
Work one section at a time, antique snowman with a mixture of acrylic brown paint and water that has been thinned to the consistency of ink. Wipe away the excess brown antiquing leaving some in the crevasses of the handmade paper mache. If antiquing gets too dark use a wet paper towel to wipe away the excess.
Christmas Socks - Make stocking cap, scarf and boots while base coat is drying.
Stocking Cap - The top elastic portion will form the rim or ribbed band of your stocking cap. Cut the sock straight across at the heel.
Illustration 1.

Turn the elastic portion over to form the ribbed band of the hat.
Tie a string, thread or colorful twist tie 1” up from the cut end.
Boots – Use the boot pattern to cut two pieces of poster board or cardboard.
illustration 2
Cut 4 rectangle pieces of knit fabric from the lower, remaining portion of your cut sock. Use white glue
to glue 1 piece of knit fabric to top and bottom of both boots. Do not cover the insert tab of the boot.
Let dry. Trim away the excess fabric from around the poster board boot. Depending on the color
of your sock you may want to touch up the cut edge with a marker or paint. On our sample we used a
black permanent marker.
Scarf – Cut away the toe and the top ribbing portion of the second sock. Cut a 1.5” width piece of the knit fabric the full length of the sock avoiding the heel.
Illustration 3
You now have a 3” wide piece approximately 8” long. Cut this in half lengthwise to make a 1.5” wide strip. Carefully glue or stitch two ends together to form a long scarf. Each end of the scarf is cut in slits to make the fringe. Set aside.
Painting detail instructions: Place your stocking cap over the head. With a pencil mark the placement of the nose first approximately ½” down from the ribbed band of the cap. Use the pencil to make an oval for the eyes and an arched “U” line for the mouth. Ink the eyes and mouth in brown permanent marker. Erase any pencil lines that are showing. Mix a small amount of red and white to rouge the cheeks. Add water to your brush and pick up a small amount of pink and apply to the cheek area on either side of the nose dot just under the eyes.
Assembly instructions:
Boots - Measure, mark and make a small slit in the front bottom portion of the snowman. Glue boots tab into slit.
Stocking cap - Glue on stocking cap and scarf. Glue some tucks and fold in the scarf. Add your button.
Twig Arms and Nose – Use an awl, nail or ice pick to punch a small hole in the snowman for the nose and arms. Make sure hole is slightly smaller than the twig. Add glue to the base of the twig and insert in hole.
Glue rusty holly garland to the center of the green band and the rusty snowflake to one of the twig arms.
