Preparation
When using PermEnamels
* Do not apply PermEnamel products within 1" of any area
that may come in contact with food. With the exception of
Surface Conditioner, this may be applied to the entire surface
as it wipes off when you are finished painting.
* If the piece is allowed to sit for more than four hours
between steps, it is necessary to apply another light coat
of Surface Conditioner before continuing to paint. This may
be applied right over the already painted areas.
* Never forget the PermEnamel Surface Conditioner if you do
the paint will not adhere to the glass and you will have gone
to a lot of work for nothing.
* Never use water with PermEnamel Colors, as it will break
down the properties of the paint. Use a mix of 4 parts Clear
Gloss Glaze to 1 part Thinner as a floating agent when painting
on glass. This mix will allow you to achieve a very fine transparent
look with your colors.
* Be sure to allow a little extra time between coats with
PermEnamel. It may feel dry to the touch but has not bonded
with the glass yet. If you don’t allow the first coat
enough time to bond the paint will slip and slide and make
a mess as later coats are applied.
* Because the glass is non-porous it will take more coats
for opaque coverage.
* PermEnamel will air-dry to the touch in just a few minutes.
But must be allowed to air-dry for 10 days before it is cured.
When cured PermEnamel is dishwasher, microwave, and oven (up
to 350 degrees) safe.
* Wash with warm soapy water and allow to dry thoroughly.
Painting Instructions for Backgrounds
* Basecoat the bottom 1-1/4" of the Candleholder and
the stripe on the Tile in Maize using the 1/2" wash/glaze
brush for the Candleholder and the #8 shader for the Tile.
Tip: ?o basecoat means to give an object total opaque coverage
means solid you can not see through it. Two thin coats are
preferable to one heavy coat. A good tip is to load the brush,
never more then halfway up the bristles. Start in the center
of the area to be painted and push the paint out to the pattern
line. This technique will leave no ridges on the edge of your
painted area.
* Do the next band on the tile using the same brush in Country
Tomato.
* Using the #1 liner do the narrow stripes on the candleholder
and the band on the tile in Burnt Sienna.
* Using the #1 liner do all of the green bands in a mix of
equal parts Olive and Cream.
Transferring Pattern
* Lay tracing paper over the pattern and trace all lines except
those used to denote shadows. The shadow lines are generally
short straight lines and several of them. Main lines are where
there are color changes.
* Detail lines are facial features, patterns on fabric, and
etc. Lay the tracing over the surface and tape at the top
and on one side. Slide the graphite paper between the tracing
and the surface; draw over the main lines only. Do not add
the detail lines these will be applied after the basecoating
is done.
* Apply the pattern
Painting Instructions * Float the shadows
under the fruit with Olive Green plus a touch of Maize using
the 1" wash/glaze brush. Tip: To float load the brush
first in floating medium or water, pat of the excess on a
paper towel. Tip one corner of the brush in color; blend the
color through the bristles of the brush using a short back
and forth motion on the palette. The color should graduate
from heavy color on the corner that you loaded to no color
on the opposite corner. If when you begin to paint, you have
color showing from both sides of the brush, it is improperly
loaded. Rinse and start again.
* The small apples and leaves on the Candleholder are done
exactly the same way only using the #8 and 12 shader.
Pears
* Basecoat the pears in a mix of 4 parts Maize to 1 part Burnt
Sienna using the 1/2" wash/glaze brush.
* Float the shadows first with Dark Goldenrod and then with
Burnt Sienna using the same brush.
* Float the highlights in the following order first with Maize
and then a mix of equal parts Maize and Cream and then Cream
using the same brush.
Apples
* Basecoat the apples in a mix of 2 parts Country Tomato to
1 part Maize using the 1/2" wash/glaze brush.
* Float the shadows first with Country Tomato and then with
Bordeaux all with the same brush.
* Float the highlights first with the basecoat mix plus a
touch of Cream and then with more Cream using the same brush.
Apples and Pear Leaves
* Basecoat the pear leaves in a mix of 2 parts Olive to 1
part Cream using the #12 shader.
* Float the shadows in the following order first with Olive
and then with Olive plus a touch of Burnt Sienna using the
same brush.
* Float the highlights in the following order first with the
base mix plus more Cream and then add a touch of Maize and
more Cream using the same brush.
Branches
* Do the branches in Burnt Sienna using the #1 liner. Streak
the highlights using the same brush a mix of 2 parts Cream
to 1 part Burnt Sienna.
