Red, White, & Blue by Chris Thornton

Taking a piece from the crafter’s realm into the decorative painting realm is not as hard as you might think. This is the same box as Made In The USA, started in the same way, just finished a little differently. These are not hard flowers to do there are just a lot of them.

Preparation
· There is no preparation required with D&CC Paper Mache pieces. Just pick up the piece and begin to paint on these wonderful quality Paper Mache pieces.

Transferring PATTERN
Click on the word pattern to see a full view of the pattern.

· Lay tracing paper over the pattern and trace all lines except those used to denote shadows. The shadow lines are generally short straight lines and several of them. Main lines are where there are color changes.

· Detail lines are facial features, patterns on fabric, and etc. Lay the tracing over the surface and tape at the top and on one side. Slide the graphite paper between the tracing and the surface; draw over the main lines only. Do not add the detail lines these will be applied after the basecoating is done.

Stenciling
· Apply the spray adhesive to the One-Step Background Stencil allow this to dry for several minutes and pat off the excess spray with a piece of paper towel. Press the stencil firmly in place repeat as many times as needed to cover the surface. Using the wedge sponge pick up a small amount of color lightly pat on the palette to remove excess paint. Using a straight up and down motion pat on the stencil. Applying two thin coats of paint is better then one thick coat of paint. If you try to apply to heavily the paint will bleed under the edge of the stencil.

Working with Crackle
· There are three layers to crackling, the basecoat, then the Crackle Medium, and last the topcoat. The topcoat is really nothing more then a basecoat applied over the Crackle Medium. Crackle Medium works because of a reaction between the crackle and the topcoat. There are three rules of thumb with Crackle Medium.

· One is that the crackle should not be totally dry when the topcoat is applied, it should be tacky. If you press your finger into the crackle and it holds your fingerprint then it is just right for applying the topcoat (approximately 15 min. depending on temp. and humidity).

· Two is that the direction in which you apply the topcoat is the direction that the cracks will follow. If you brush the paint horizontally across the board the cracks will run horizontally.

· Three is that the heavier you apply the topcoat over the crackle medium the larger the cracks will be.

Painting Instructions
· Basecoat the entire Paper Mache Oval Ribbon Tie Box in Blue Storm using the 1” wash/glaze brush. Tip: Basecoating is simply applying paint to give a total opaque coverage this means solid so you can not see through it. Two thin coats are preferable to one heavy coat. A good tip is to load the brush, never more then halfway up the bristles. Start in the center of the area to be painted and push the paint out to the pattern line. This technique will leave no ridges on the edge of your painted area.

· Apply the Crackle Medium following the instructions above to the lid top and sides only.

· Apply a mix of 5 parts Blue Lagoon to 1 part Blue Storm using the 1” wash/glaze brush in a slip slap motion so your cracks will run all directions to the top. Apply Raw Linen on the sides. Allow to dry thoroughly. If you do not allow this to dry for several hours, when you press the stencil on it could lift parts of your paint. Do not press on the stencil to hard.

· Stencil the stars on the lid with the wedge sponge using Pale Yellow on one-half of the sponge and Straw on the other half. This will give your stars a variety of different colors. It is easier to not worry about the oval when you are stenciling just paint over top of them.

· Basecoat the outside edge of the oval 1” wide around the lid of the box in Blue Storm.

· Using the #1 liner do the Straw band around the lid.

· Apply the floral pattern.

· Following the step by step first stroke the outer flower petals in Dark Burnt Umber using the #12 shader. This process will be repeated throughout the whole flower.

· Next stroke the petal with Mudstone coming a little over half way down the petal using the same brush.

· Repeat this process with Raw Linen.

· For the first layer of the inner petals us a mix of equal pats Mudstone and Dark Burnt Umber.

· Next use Raw Linen.

· Last use White, also touch a little tiny bit of White to the very outer edge of outside petals.

· Basecoat the centers of the flowers and the stripes on the side of the box all in Moroccan Red using the #12 brush. Float the shadows down the sides of the stripes and around the centers of the flowers all in Dark Burnt Umber using the same brush. Float the highlights in the center of the flowers and down the opposite sides of the stripes in Fruit Punch.

· Add just a touch of Pale Yellow to the Fruit Punch and do all of the swirls using the #1 liner and dots in the centers of the flowers using a toothpick.

· Using the #1 liner do the edges of the stripes in Blue Storm.

· Basecoat the leaves in Medium Foliage Green using the #12 shader.

· Float the shadows with Gamal Green using the same brush.

· Float the highlights with a mix of equal parts Medium Foliage Green and Apple Green using the same brush.

· Float the brightest highlights with Apple Green.

To Finish
· Apply one even coat of Satin Varnish to the entire piece and allow to dry.

· Apply an even coat of Brown Antiquing Gel to the entire surface and wipe off the excess with a soft cloth. To antique apply one even coat, full coverage, of antiquing gel to the surface. Wipe off the excess allowing the paint to remain in the crevices and the cracks. When using an acrylic antiquing gel you must work fairly rapidly. If working on a large piece work one area at a time.
